Rainbow, 2018, Latex, fabric pins, cotton, red yarn, sequin, and female razor

Rainbow features stuffed arched legs sewn together with a sequin fall pouring down, resembling the shape and colors of a rainbow. The grotesque hanging sculpture explores the shifting boundaries between the self and society. Through juxtaposing the visceral body parts and artificial objects such as sequins, fabric pins, and a female razor, Rainbow captures the internalization of the external influences in one’s behaviors. Bombarded by the mass-consumed beauty norms, the body becomes a battleground where one constantly seeks to negotiate and reconstruct an identity through violent processes of both compromise and resistance. The painful metamorphosis of soft hairs into sharp spikes further embodies this bodily experience. Captivating in its physicality, Rainbow brings together and engages with the sensations of vulnerability, tension, and struggle.
